Balenciaga - A Brief Background
The Balenciaga brand was founded in 1917, by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Cristóbal Balenciaga grew up in a small fishing village in Getaria, and showed an interest in fashion from a young age, helping his mother with her seamstress work.
In fact, Cristóbal went on to keep the sewing machine his mother used and placed it pride of place on his mantelpiece. At the young age of 12, he started an apprenticeship with a local tailor, which only fuelled his passion for fashion.
His network grew, and he began meeting socialites in the area - including Marquesa de Casa Torres, who was the face of some of his early designs.
Balenciaga is at the heart of the Haute Couture scene and has created designs for celebrities, actresses, and even royalty.
Cristóbal Balenciaga developed a taste for sophistication and quickly knew that he wanted to go in the direction of luxury design. He was able to sew, cut, and pattern his own designs, which gave him the edge he needed to succeed.
His creative streak, his skill, and his eye for detail is what allowed him to work with the Spanish royals - and the aristocracy began wearing Balenciaga designs, raising his reputation and his profile.
The first Balenciaga couture house opened in 1937, and he soon developed a reputation as the ‘King of Fashion’ - and other designers respected him. Christian Dior even called him the ‘master of us all’.
Cristóbal Balenciaga passed away in 1972, at the age of 77. The Balenciaga fashion house was left for 14 years before Jacques Bogart brought the rights and breathed new life into the couture house.
Nicolas Ghesquière became the Creative Director of the fashion house in 1997, and then in 2001, Kering (luxury goods company) acquired the brand.
In 2015, Demna Gvasalia, a Georgian designer, became the artistic director of the collections. His way of thinking is ‘deconstruction for construction’ - which means taking something apart to create something new.
His pieces are influenced by sportswear styles, and he focuses on comfort and practicality while ensuring that the luxury element of Balenciaga remains and thrives.
Today, Balenciaga is known for its luxury fashion and footwear - specifically the stylish, retro, as well as contemporary luxury footwear designs.
What Are The Balenciaga Speed Runners?
The Speed Runners were first released back in 2016 by Balenciaga. They were an instant hit, with influencers and celebrities spotted wearing them going about their daily lives, and some even posting them on social media.
The likes of Kylie Jenner, Gucci Mane, Future, Haily Baldwin, and Ashlee Simpson (and countless others) have all been snapped wearing the popular Speeds.
The Speed Runners feature a heavy, large base with a slim sock-like design - which is why they’re also known as the Speed Sock.
They’re stylish, comfortable, and feature an athletic aesthetic. The articulated sole and the sock-like design modernise the traditional trainer, offering a stylish and contemporary look.
They offer a great fit - the elasticated hemline ensures that they fit snugly. You can find the Balenciaga logo written across the side of the shoe, which, as always, epitomises elegance.
Chunky soles have been in fashion for a while now, and the Speeds feature a chunky, ridged sole. This offers both comfort and style, as well as plenty of underfoot flexibility.
But what can you wear with the Speed Runners? Read on to find out!
What Do I Wear With Balenciaga Speed Runners?
The Balenciaga Speed Runners are versatile - you can wear them pretty much anywhere on any occasion. Whether you’re going for a brisk walk in the park, a workout in the gym, or lunch with friends, you’re sure to look fresh and stylish with a pair of Speeds.
However, the Balenciaga Speed Runners look best with casual wear, gym wear, and loungewear. Kyle Kenner rocked the Speed Runners with stylish all-black high waisted leggings and a sports bra combo for a laid back, sporty look.
To look your best in your Speeds and leggings, opt for cropped leggings - Speeds look better with a little ankle showing. Avoid wearing long socks as the Speed Runners already somewhat resemble a sock - which means they’ll likely clash with longer socks.
For a more laid back look, why not try bicycle shorts and cropped tee with your Speeds? Or a tracksuit, or simply a crop top or bralette and a pair of joggers? If you’re not a fan of loungewear or sportswear, you’ll be glad to know that Speed Runners can pair well with jeans and flared trousers too.
Flared trousers with a slit can really show off your stylish Speed Runners, and you can pair them with a combination of patterns and colours. However, if you’re opting for a non-black option, be sure that the colours pair well.
There’s nothing stopping you from trying Speed Runners and a skirt or dress, either. Lily Allen rocked Converse with a dress, so why can’t you rock Speeds and a dress?
The Balenciaga Speed Runners are easy to style, and can pair well with a wide variety of outfits and styles. No matter what your fashion style is, you’re sure to find the perfect look with Speed Runners.
