Givenchy has been one of the most popular fashion brands since its launch in the early ’50s, so it’s no surprise that celebrities are spotted wearing Givenchy designs all around the globe.
From Royalty to Actresses to The Kardashians, celebrities seem to love the luxury brand. But why is it such a popular brand for celebrities?
Keep reading to learn more about the Givenchy brand, the celebrities that love Givenchy, and why it’s so popular amongst A-listers.
What Is Givenchy?
Givenchy was founded by designer Hubert De Givenchy in France in 1952. It’s one of the leading fashion brands in the world, known for its haute-couture clothes, accessories, perfumes and cosmetics.
The Givenchy house is a part of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture et du Pret-a-Porter. The brand also fell under the LVHM umbrella in 1988, creating ties with Marc Jabocs, Christian Dior, Stella McCartney, and other luxury labels.
The first Givenchy collection was ‘Seperates’, which launched when Hubert De Givenchy was only 25.
The collection featured a combination of mix and match pieces and offered an alternative to the restrictive and un-practical clothing available to women at the time.
This gave women the option to mix and match different skirts and different tops, instead of being restricted to a one-piece. The designs were fresh and new and brought in the era of slender hips, swan-like hips, and slim silhouettes.
In 1955, Givenchy introduced the shirtdress which very quickly became a staple piece in wardrobes throughout France.
Short skirts also became popularized by Givenchy, which revolutionized the women’s fashion scene - short skirts have barely gone out of fashion since.
The brand became more male-inclusive in the late ’60s when Givenchy Gentleman launched - which was well-received by men all around France.
The Givenchy Gentlemen scent was introduced a few years later, and you can still buy variations of the popular scent to this day.
What Celebs Wear Givenchy?
Many people believe that Givenchy wouldn’t have reached the heights it did without the help of Audrey Hepburn.
Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn met in 1953, which was the beginning of a great friendship and professional relationship.
Hepburn wore several Givenchy pieces for American rom-com Sabrina, including the iconic floral, flowing wedding dress.
Another iconic Hepburn-Givenchy collaboration was the little black dress worn by Hepburn in the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
People around the globe are familiar with the iconic opening scene where Holly Golightly leaves the taxi in the gorgeous black satin dress holding the necessities - a coffee and a croissant.
Givenchy’s design for Hepburn’s role is often referred to as one of the most influential dresses in the history of costume design.
Audrey Hepburn spoke highly of Givenchy and his designs, and was quoted saying ‘Givenchy is far more than a couturier… he creates personalities.”
As a result of their friendship, Givenchy dedicated his perfume L’Intertit to Hepburn in ‘67, and she became the face of the fresh, floral scent.
Meghan Markle’s Wedding Dress
As soon as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in 2017, people everywhere were asking the same question - what will her wedding dress look like?
The 23.7 million households that tuned in to the wedding stream on the 19th of May 2018 were not disappointed when Meghan’s minimalist, classy, and elegant wedding dress was revealed.
The haute couture dress was made using double-bonded silk cady cushioned by a triple silk organza underskirt.
The Palace approved of the gown, and said that the gown epitomises “a timeless minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic house”.
The dress was designed by the fashion house’s current artistic director, Clare Waight Keller. She became the first female artistic director of Givenchy in 2017 and released many iconic pieces in her 3-year reign at the label.
Waight Keller met Markle within a year of becoming artistic director, and Markle was quoted saying that she “chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour”.
Her wedding day wasn’t the only time The Duchess has been spotted wearing Givenchy.
On Remembrance Sunday, she was seen wearing a stylish black Givenchy coat at the Cenotaph, and at the 2018 British Fashion Awards, she wore a gorgeous black Givenchy dress to honour the brand and the designer, Claire Waight Keller.
The Kardashian/ Jenner Family
The Kardashian and Jenner family have been spotted sporting Givenchy attire on numerous occasions, and of course, being the social-media moguls they are, posting about the brand and its designs.
Kim Kardashian wore a Givenchy wedding gown to her marriage with rapper Kanye West. Millions of people saw the iconic photographs of Kim wearing the $500,000 custom-made couture Givenchy gown.
Most recently, the famous family showed their support to the fashion house’s newest Creative Director, Matthew Williams.
He launched his first Givenchy collection last year, and as expected, it was a big hit. Kim Kardashian posed wearing a fierce Givenchy dress.
The Jenner sisters also showed their support for Williams’ first collection, with Kylie Kenner flaunting a Givenchy baby pink mini dress with matching over-the-knee boots, and Kendall wearing a stylishly bold black leather biker outfit.
